Upgrading the "CD palette"

17-01-2020

Bye bye "CD palette" and hello wet palette!

After discovering the existence of a wet palette online, I had never heard of it, and some researching the different types that are sold I went out and purchased one.

Now I almost hear you gasping for air ... Yes, I really went outside to an actual store and no I didn't order it online. And I have some good reasons for that:

  • Price: Despite what most websites claim it is actually cheaper to go and buy it at your local arts and craft store. The item itself may be slightly cheaper online, but when you factor in the cost for shipping I saved roughly 7€.
  • Inspiration: Have you ever just strolled around in an arts and craft store? There's so much cool stuff in those stores that I always find something interesting or fun to try out next time.

  • Advice: Call me old fashioned, but I prefer talking to a person instead of searching everything online.

So what do you get when buying a wet palette?

As you can see in the picture I purchased one from Daler-Rowney. It's a wet palette specifically for use with acrylic paints and that's what we use to paint mini's. Inside is the container that holds the reservoir paper, water and membrane paper, a clear plastic lid that seals airtight and a bag with 3 sheets of reservoir paper and 12 sheets of membrane paper.

The container and lid are made from quite a solid feeling plastic, so it can take some bumps without getting damaged.

The workspace of the container is about the same size as an A4 piece of paper. It also has a compartiment for storing brushes in a little bit of water to keep them damp and ready for use.

Very eager to try it out!
