Getting sidetracked

06-01-2020

40K was my big draw back into the hobby, I just love all the fluff surrounding this game by Games Workshop. Whilst I am still reading up on the 8th edition rules, drooling over the Codexes and the absolutely superb range of miniatures, painting terrain and assembling minis (read that as struggling to get the paint where I want it to go and gluing my fingers together), I got a little sidetracked:

When I was rummaging through "the internets" I stumbled upon some pictures of a ruleset I had never heard of before for Fantasy tabletop battles. Quite some years ago I had about 3000+ points of Vampire Counts that got to see far to little action on the tabletop because I could not get into the flow of shuffling massed ranks of zombies and skeletons around the battlefield. The game always seemed to go at a snails pace and it took away most of the fun for me. I did however always really liked the look of an undead horde.

And here's where that unknown ruleset comes into play:

From what I understand after only reading bits and pieces of the ruleset is that it is a basic set of rules usable in almost any scale from 6mm to 28mm that doesn't follow any specific range of miniatures.

It allows for players to either use single models or complete units of multiple models to standalone monsters and anything in between. I believe this works because of the counting of wounds instead of actual models on the tabletop. Thus giving players the chance to model an army completely to their liking not worrying about adhering your units to specific rules or building them to fixed numbers of models. Just pop some sort of wound counter with your units and you're good to go ... I think.

This got me looking at some different ranges of miniatures, scales and possible races to play. But who am I kidding? Soon enough I was looking only at various ranges of Undead.

Then I was looking at various ways of modeling hordes on bigger bases incorporating some dice on the base to act as wound counter.

Which led to copious amounts of searches on the internet to find the rules, comparing prices of different ranges of miniatures ...

I know ... I'm terrible ...

This will go on the "to-do" list for 2021!

Now back to painting up all that terrain so I can finally post some pictures of that and get to play some Kill Team with the kids at home!
